One of our members, Jeyakumar Devaraj, who is also the MP for Sungai Siput, has been arrested and detained together with 29 other members of Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM).

They were charged with trying to revive the communist party and waging war against the king. These charges are absurd and outrageous. There isn't a shred of evidence to support the police claim.

All of them have been remanded for 7 days under deplorable living conditions. The detainees went to court to seek a revision of the remand order at the Penang High Court which was rejected by the judge on 30 June.

Some women were ill-treated and assaulted with 14 of them crammed into a room meant for six only in Kepala Batas police station. The toilet, it is revealed, doesn't work and those wanting to drink were apparently asked to drink from the toilet bowl as reported in Malaysiakini. It was also reported that a diabetic patient who asked for drinking water to take her medicine was given syrup for this purpose.

Two teenagers are detained separately in Sungai Dua in a room without lights. Both of them are unable to defecate because the toilet was not functioning.

Seven men, including Jeyakumar are being held at the Police Headquarters, Penang Road, in solitary confinement.

The members of the PSM are people who are not prone to violence and they conduct their legitimate activities openly and according to democratic principles. They don't carry any arms and they don't receive any training in the use of lethal weapons.

They are dedicated to championing the welfare of the downtrodden, the marginalized and the helpless communities who deserve to be treated with compassion.

Their detention and the charges levelled against them are totally unjustified. How could these 30 unarmed Malaysians comprising 11 women, 17 men and two teenagers wage a war against the king? The charges are ludicrous and without basis.

Aliran would like to appeal to all concerned and caring Malaysians to send letters of appeal for their release to the Prime Minister and the Inspector General of Police.

We write to you concerning the detention of Member of Parliament Sungai Siput Dr Jeyakumar Devaraj and 29 members of the Parti Sosialis Malaysia who have been detained in Penang.

They have been charged for attempting to revive the Communist Party and waging war against the King. These are extreme charges especially when there is no shred of evidence to support this.

We understand that they are being held under deplorable conditions which are not acceptable especially when Malaysia sits on the UN Human Rights Council.

தற்போது பொருள்களின் விலைவாசி ஏறிக் கொண்டே போகிறது. நடுத்தர மக்கள் மற்றும் தொழிலளார்களின் பொருளாதார நிலைமை மோசமாகிக் கொண்டிருக்கும் இவ்வேளையில் குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பள அமலாக்கத்தில் அரசாங்கம் மெத்தனப் போக்கை காட்டிவருவத்தின் காரணம் என்ன என்று கிள்ளான் நாடாளுமன்ற உறுப்பினர் சார்ல்ஸ் சந்தியாகோ கேட்கிறார்.

மலேசியாவில் குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பளத்திற்கு அர்த்தம் இல்லாமல் இருக்கிறது என கூறிய சார்ல்ஸ், குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பளம் என்பது மக்கள் அவர்களின் வறுமை நிலையிலிருந்து மீளவும், அவர்களின் உழைப்பிற்கு தகுந்த ஊதியம் பெறுவதை உறுதி செய்வதாகும். அச்சம்பளம் வாழ்க்கை நடத்த ஏதுவாக இருக்க வேண்டுமே தவிர, அவர்களை மேலும் வறுமைக்கு இட்டுச்செல்லக் கூடாது.

உதாரணத்திற்கு, நாட்டிலுள்ள பாதுகாவாலர்களின் குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பளம் வறுமை கோட்டிற்கு கீழ் உள்ளது. நாளுக்கு நாள் விலைவாசி ஏறிக்கொண்டிருக்கும் இக்காலக்கட்டத்தில் ரிம 500 – ரிம 700 வாழ்க்கை நடத்த போதுமானதா? என அவர் வினவினார்.

நாட்டின் வளத்திற்காகவும் நலனுக்காகவும் வியர்வை சிந்தி உழைக்கும் இந்தத் தொழிலாளர்களின் குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பளம் வறுமை கோட்டிற்கு கீழ் இருப்பது ஏற்றுக் கொள்ள முடியாது என சார்ல்ஸ் திட்ட வட்டமாக கூறினார்.

தொழிலாளர்களின் சம்பளத்தை நிர்ணயிக்க குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பள ஆலோசனை மன்றம் இருந்தும் அம்முடிவுகளை தீர்மானம் செய்யும் உரிமையும் அதிகாரமும் ஏன் பிரதமர் துறைக்கு உள்ளது என கேள்வி எழுப்பிய சார்ல்ஸ், அப்படியானால் இம்மன்றம் இயங்குவதற்கான காரணம்தான் என்ன? மக்களின் நிதி தேவையில்லாமல் இம்மன்றத்திக்கு செலவழிக்கப் பட்டும் கடைசியில் பிரதமர் துறை எடுக்கும் முடிவே இறுதியானது என கூறுவது வேடிக்கையாக இருக்கிறது என்றார் சார்ல்ஸ்.

ஆகவே, முதலில் குறைந்தபட்ச சம்பளம் என்பதை அகற்றி வாழ்க்கை நடத்த கண்ணியமான சம்பளம் நியமிக்கும் மன்றத்தை உருவாக்க வேண்டும். அம்மன்றம் சுயேட்சையாகவும், தன்னாட்சிமிக்கவையாகவும் இருத்தல் வேண்டும். அம்மன்றத்தில் உள்ள பிரதிநிதிகள் முதலாளி அமைப்புகளிலிருந்தும் தொழிலாளர்கள் சங்கங்களிலிருந்தும் தேர்தெடுக்கப் பட்டவர்களாகவும் இருப்பதோடு அவர்களுக்கு தொழிலாளர் சட்டம் தெரிந்திருக்கவும் வேண்டும். அதில் பிரதமர் அல்லது அமைச்சர் துறை தலையீடு இருத்தல் கூடாது.

கண்ணியமான சம்பளமாக தற்போதைய வாழ்க்கை செலவுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு ரிம 1500 – 2000 வரையில் இருத்தல் வேண்டும் என சார்ல்ஸ் வலியுறுத்தினார்.
