Encourage Inter-Faith Dialogue to Promote Harmony in the Country.

I vehemently condemn the recent vandalism against a surau near Seremban where red paint was splashed on its walls and back door.

This shameful and cowardly act goes against the tenets of religious teachings which are rooted in respect and reverence for all religions.

It is insensitive to the feelings of fellow Muslims especially in the holy month of Ramadhan.

The country also saw arson attempts on churches and attacks on a mosque and Sikh temple early January this year.

All these attacks crystallize the government's failure to find a sustainable solution to the declining race-relations in the country. It also reflects a worsening of the country’s race-based political landscape.

To top it off we have the likes of Ibrahim Ali, Dr Mohd Ridhuan Tee and the infamous Perak mufti Harussani Zakaria whose pet lines include asking fellow Malaysians to go back to their homeland.

Such ugly bigotry would only work to besmirch and destroy the social fabric of the nation. Not to mention that it makes a mockery of Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak’s 1Malaysia call, which zeroes in on national integration through racial unity.

Let’s reflect for a moment on the implications of this attack – the images that would flash before us are gory and frightening.

As such, I urge restraint from everyone concerned and call upon the government to stop distracting the public from real issues and instead work at fostering closer relationship among people.

I also call upon the leaders of the country to hold open inter-faith dialogues and varied discussions with political leaders, civil society representatives and religious leaders to find a solution to the continuing religious strife in the country.
