KLANG: The Klang district office and the Klang municipal council (MPK) were taken to task for not adhering to a state government’s directive not to demolish temples or shrines with its prior approval.

Twenty-five officers from the disrict office and MPK demolished a shrine in Jalan Pendamar, Pandamaran, at 10am, citing that the shrine was built illegally on government land.

"The shrine caretaker and I had discussed this matter with the district office earlier and the caretaker had agreed to move the shrine. Why the need to jump the gun?" asked Klang MP Charles Santiago.

He added that the district office had also confirmed in its meeting minutes on July 6 that it will not demolish the shrine before getting approval from the state government.

"Besides, a lot of houses nearby had extensions touching government land. Why were not those demolished as well? Why target the shrine alone?"

He also alleged that one of the officers tried to hit the shrine caretaker, who is a woman.

"When I asked the district officer Bakhtiar Hussein who gave the approval for the demolition, he pleaded ignorance and said he was outstation. I cannot accept this reasoning."

‘Suspend officer immediately’

Santiago said he will bring the matter with the state government for immediate action.

"The officer who intimidated the woman should also be suspended immediately pending an investigation."

Former MIC leader KP Samy also said the district office and MPK should have adhered to protocol and allowed the caretaker to remove the shrine herself.

"They should not have demolished the shrine without getting approval. Besides, the caretaker had already agreed to remove the shrine, so they should have given her time," KP Samy said.

However, he urged Indians not to erect shrines or temples everywhere as it may not go down well with the other communities.

"I understand that the Pakatan state government has given Indians a lot of flexibility over the matter. The Indians in turn should not erect shrines in every residential area," he said.

He urged Indians to focus more on getting quality education and enhancing Indian equity in the economic cake rather than building more shrines.
